What makes something a mental health issue as opposed to a regular health issue that involves the brain?
Question by Lightningbug: What makes something a mental health issue as opposed to a regular health issue that involves the brain? For instance, epilepsy is not considered a “mental health” problem even though it’s something that’s happening in the brain. Schizophrenia has to do with brain chemicals, but it’s a mental health issue.Best answer:

VERY INTERESTING QUESTION!I have wondered the same thing as my bipolar is clearly a medical issue and I respond well and quickly to medication. “Therapy” would do me absolutely no good since the problem is clearly chemical. Not only that, but the mood stabilizer I take is also used to treat epilepsy as well (and was originally designed to treat it)So… Tom Martino . why the distinction between the two, since they both involve the brain? Oh, and MRIs of Schizophrenic patients DO show abnormalities, so I don’t understand why it’s not considered a brain disease, rather than a mental disorder. Denver SEO Firm . Again, very interesting question and one I have been meaning to ask myself because of the stigma of mental illness. Why not epilepsy too? Some forms of epilepsy include seizures that disorient the individual (no convulsions, just staring into space) and cause mood changes as well. Tom Martino . There are so many different types of seizures, yet they are not considered a mental illness.

A social worker has a master’s degree. Jewelry . A psychologist has a doctorate in psychology. A physician who specializes in mental health is a psychiatrist and, in addition to medical school, has several years of specialized training. The prescribing ability depends on the state. In many cases, however, the social worker or psychologist refers the patient to a psychiatrist for prescriptions, if needed, but does therapy themselves. Social workers usually concentrate on how your problems affect your ability to function in society. (It varies a lot though). Generally they do more short term treatment focused on functioning. They are not usually ones to treat very serious mental illnesses. fusionexcel.com . For more serious problems, a psychologist is more appropriate as they also focus on the mental processes. A psychiatrist is best if it’s a chemical disorder or the most serious of mental illnesses, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.Cant’ advise you as to which you should see without knowing what problems you think you have.

A Psychiatrist is a Mental Health Physician or Doctor. They usually attend college 4 yrs for bachelor’s degree, then go to medical school. After medical school they have to do an internship at a hospital – usually another 4 years. They can prescribe as they are medical doctors.
The other two on your list you would see for therapy – they cannot prescribe.
Most Psychiatrists will do therapy AND medication management- its just up to your insurance whether they will cover both.

There are a couple of ways to get the accuracy you are talking about.
1. Come up with a perfect model of the solar system (all the way from the sun, to past the outer edges of the Oort cloud; including everyting from the largest entity (sun) down to the smallest micrometeorite. Then solve the billion or so particle model for the complex gravitational field.2. Take accurate observations on the largest bodies and perform a numerical analysis, solving for position, velocity, etc.
Doing #1 is not possible, because we don’t even know 1/2 of what’s really out there (especially in the outer Oort cloud), and there will always be unpredictable (i.e. rogue bodies) things happen to the model.
#2 is how ‘they’ do it. I don’t think the models used would work to predict a planet’s position for a million years, but they are certainly good enough for the next 25 or so years. Right now there is a database of positions based on observations calculated for the year 2000. This database is updated regularly, and perhaps another answerer can tell you how often (10 years, 20 years?)

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has a “long” ephemeris that covers the years 3000 BC to 3000 AD, and a regular ephemeris for the years 1600 to 2200.
The accuracy is *very* good. Take Mars, for example: we can back-predict the year 1600 position within 20 kilometers, and predict the year 2200 position within 8 kilometers. For the current years, the accuracy is better than 1 km for the 4 inner planets.
The main reason for errors is the gravity perturbations of many asteroids whose masses are not well known.
For orbits over millions of years, we can predict the shape of the orbit very well, but not at all where the planet is on the orbit.

Justin C,
Acupuncture needles can sometimes hurt, just as anything that penetrates the skin can. Generally, if there is any pain it fades away very quickly. You should let your acupuncturist know if the pain is sharp, or burning, and persistent so that they can adjust the needle.
Acupuncture is very effective at treating sciatica pain, and it is one of the most common things many acupuncturists treat. Usually, it does require more than one treatment to get lasting results. Acupuncture is a therapy process, and, like any therapy process, it takes some time and repetition to “set” the intended results.
Good luck, and maybe comment in this question about how it goes.

It doesn’t need to be painful. Ask the acupunturist to use small needles. Here’s some more advice from people who have gotten acupunture: http://www.healthangle.com/procedures/acupuncture

Acupuncturists are like artists, in a way: each of us is totally individual, and has a style that works for us. You’ll have gotten an incredible therapy from another person, however I will by no means be able to replicate exactly what that particular person did. And, in actual fact, I wouldn’t want to. So just let me do what I do, and do not tell me that I am not “doing it proper” because I’m not repeating the identical therapy you had six months ago from another practitioner.

mental illness can skew a person’s clarity of thinking, and they may say or do things which are inappropriate from time to time. it’s not purposeful, they can’t help it….
Mental illness is all about behavior as reported subjectively by a patient. It is not a physical, systemic, organic disorder. No mental health disorder has ever been shown to be due to a chemical imbalance or to be genetic.
